Ipratropium bromide works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and widening the bronchial passages. This helps to improve airflow to the lungs and alleviate symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing.
Atrovent is available in various forms, including inhalation solutions, metered-dose inhalers, and nasal sprays.
How to use
Here are general guidelines for using Atrovent in its different forms:
Inhalation solution:
- Use a nebulizer: Atrovent inhalation solution is typically used with a nebulizer, a device that converts the medication into a fine mist for inhalation.
- Administer the solution: Place the measured dose of Atrovent solution into the nebulizer chamber, connect the mouthpiece or face mask, and inhale the mist until the medication is fully consumed.
- Rinse your mouth: After using Atrovent, rinse your mouth with water to minimize the risk of throat irritation.
Metered-dose inhaler:
- Shake the inhaler: Shake the Atrovent inhaler well before use to ensure proper dispersion of the medication.
- Prepare the inhaler: Remove the cap, hold the inhaler upright, and prime it by spraying it into the air away from your face. This helps ensure the proper dose is delivered.
- Breathe out: Exhale completely to empty your lungs before using the inhaler.
- Inhale the medication: Place the mouthpiece between your lips, creating a seal, and inhale deeply through your mouth as you simultaneously press down on the inhaler to release the medication.
- Hold your breath: After inhaling, hold your breath for a few seconds to allow the medication to reach deep into your lungs.
- Rinse your mouth: To minimize the risk of throat irritation, rinse your mouth with water after using the inhaler.
Nasal spray:
- Prepare the nasal spray: Remove the cap and shake the Atrovent nasal spray well.
- Clear your nasal passages: Blow your nose gently to clear any obstructions before using the spray.
- Position the spray: Insert the nozzle into one nostril, tilting your head slightly forward. Close the other nostril by pressing a finger against it.
- Administer the spray: Press down on the spray nozzle while inhaling gently through your nose. Breathe out through your mouth.
- Repeat for the other nostril: If a second spray is needed, repeat the process for the other nostril.
- Clean the spray nozzle: After each use, wipe the spray nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap.
Dosage
The dosage of Atrovent can vary depending on the specific condition being treated, the severity of symptoms, and individual factors. The following dosage information is a general guideline:
For COPD and asthma:
- Inhalation solution: The usual adult dose is 500 micrograms (mcg) to 1 milligram (mg) three to four times a day, administered via nebulizer.
- Metered-dose inhaler: The usual adult dose is 2 inhalations (42 mcg each) four times a day. In some cases, a higher dose of 4 inhalations (42 mcg each) four times a day may be prescribed.
- Nasal spray: The usual adult dose is 2 sprays (21 mcg each) in each nostril two to three times a day.
For bronchitis:
- Inhalation solution: The usual adult dose is 500 mcg to 1 mg three to four times a day, administered via nebulizer.
- Metered-dose inhaler: The usual adult dose is 2 inhalations (42 mcg each) three to four times a day.
For children:
- The dosage for children will be determined based on their age, weight, and condition.
Atrovent is available in different strengths and formulations (inhalation solution, metered-dose inhaler, nasal spray). The prescribed dosage and frequency of administration will depend on the specific product prescribed to you.
Side effects
Atrovent may cause certain side effects in some individuals. It's important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects, and their severity can vary. Common side effects can include:
- Dry mouth: Pharmaceutical product can reduce saliva production, leading to a dry or sticky sensation in the mouth. Drinking water or using sugar-free candies or gum may help alleviate this symptom.
- Nasal dryness or irritation: When using Atrovent nasal spray, some individuals may experience dryness or irritation in the nasal passages. This can be managed by using a saline nasal spray or applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly inside the nostrils.
- Headache: Headaches can occur as a side effect of Atrovent use.
- Cough or throat irritation: Some individuals may experience a temporary cough or throat irritation when using Atrovent inhalation solutions or nasal spray. Rinsing the mouth with water after inhalation or using a spacer device with the inhaler may help minimize these effects.
- Blurred vision: Medicament may cause temporary vision changes, such as blurred vision or difficulty focusing. If this occurs, avoid activities that require clear vision, such as driving or operating machinery.
- Urinary retention: In some cases, Atrovent can affect urinary function and cause difficulty in passing urine. This side effect is more common in older adults or individuals with pre-existing urinary conditions.
These are not all the possible side effects of Atrovent. Some individuals may experience other side effects.
If you experience severe side effects, such as rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, or signs of an allergic reaction (such as rash, itching, or swelling), seek immediate medical attention.
Storage
To store Atrovent properly, follow these guidelines:
- Keep it in a cool, dry place: Store medicine at room temperature, away from excessive heat and moisture. Avoid storing it in the bathroom, as the humidity can affect its potency.
- Protect from light: Keep Atrovent away from direct sunlight or intense artificial light, as exposure to light can degrade the medication.
- Secure the packaging: Ensure that the medication is stored in its original packaging or container with a tightly closed cap or lid. This helps to protect it from air and moisture.
- Keep it out of reach of children and pets: Store Atrovent in a location that is out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion.
- Do not freeze: Do not freeze Atrovent. Freezing can alter the effectiveness and stability of the medication.
- Check expiration date: Check the expiration date on the packaging and do not use Atrovent beyond that date. Expired medication may not be as effective and can potentially be harmful.
If you have any unused or expired Atrovent, do not flush it down the toilet or throw it in the trash.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose of Atrovent or have accidentally taken more than the prescribed dosage, it is important to seek immediate medical attention or contact a poison control center.
Symptoms of an Atrovent overdose may include:
- Severe dizziness or lightheadedness
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Dry mouth and throat
- Blurred vision
- Flushing or redness of the skin
- Nausea and vomiting
If you or someone else may have overdosed on Atrovent, do not delay seeking medical help. Call emergency services or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
It is important to provide as much information as possible about the medication taken, the dosage used, and the time of ingestion.
While waiting for medical assistance, do not induce vomiting.
Missed Doses
If you miss a dose of Atrovent, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
It is important to maintain a consistent dosing schedule to ensure the effectiveness of the medication. If you frequently forget to take your doses or have difficulty remembering, it may be helpful to set reminders or establish a routine to help you remember to take Atrovent as prescribed.
